How A Simple Seed Can Save Your Vision

The word ‘seed’ for me is full of potential, the start of something good. If you want to look after your vision a good seed to ‘plant’ in your breakfast is the Chia Seed. They come from the plant Salvia hispanica, they are now known for their high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, fibre, protein, and various essential minerals.

The seeds are from Central America and Mexico and have been used as a food source from as long ago as 3500BC! Indeed, the seeds were a staple food of the Aztecs and Mayans.

Although these ancient civilisations would not know the nutritional ‘breakdown’ of the seed like we do today, they somehow knew of its goodness as the word ‘chia’ comes from the Mayan word for strength.

One eye condition I see a lot, is called Macular Degeneration, this can start to happen in the eye from the age of 50 and it can cause blindness if not promptly managed.Prevention is better than cure, and one of the best foods to prevent macular degeneration is the chia seed. I sprinkle some on my porridge or yogurt every morning to help protect my eyes for the future.

So why not be like a Mayan Warrior and keep your eyes protected with Chia seeds?!

(As always, double check with your healthcare provider if you have any dietary concerns and sprinkle some seeds!)

Until next time my dear reader!
