Blinded By The Lights
Have you ever experienced that moment when the winter sun is so low in the sky that it blinds you while driving? It's a bit like the song Blinded By the Lights—a great tune by Bruce Springsteen (released in 1973 on his album Born To Run - highly recommend!) —but back to real life, it’s not quite as fun, especially when it’s right in your eyes and you can’t see the road!
One of the reasons the winter sun can be so glaring is because the sun is lower in the sky and sometimes directly into your line of sight. I don’t usually complain about the sun—after all, it’s better than having grey skies all day. But when you're behind the wheel, that sudden flash of light can be dangerous, especially on certain stretches of road, like when I'm driving up Loftus Bank.
But don't worry, there’s an easy solution: polarised sunglasses. They work like magic by filtering out the horizontal light that causes glare, so you can see clearly without squinting or being temporarily blinded. It’s like having a pair of superpowered eyes—just with a bit of help from some good glasses.
We use Zeiss lenses at our practice, and they’ve developed a specific lens for driving that uses Zeiss Skylet Technology. This innovative technology not only reduces glare but also enhances contrast, making it easier to see details like road signs or road markings, even on cloudy days.
Plus, if you're an EyePlan member, you get your EyePlan discount off sunglasses too, so you can grab a pair and be safe from that winter sun glare. It's a win-win!
Until next time,
Yours sincerely,
John Prouse
